Netflix has announced its €65m acquisition of the Finnish mobile game developer Next Games that produces games based on Netflix shows like Stranger Things and The Walking Dead. For context, mobile gaming currently accounts for over 50% of the market!
Will Netflix’s move into gaming make it a stronger player in the streaming wars? What do YOU think, forum?

There is a bit of a trend developing in this space and a lot of consolidation in the gaming world, with Amazon, Meta and Google also wanting to expand their gaming capabilities. So, I think this is a smart move and could bring a new revenue stream for Netflix, and judging for the amount of dealmaking in the industry, I’d say it’d be better for Netflix to get involved now.

After the Microsoft/Activision deal, diversifying Netflix’s business seems more pertinent than ever before for various reasons. Firstly, the streaming industry is suffering right now (following the lifting of lockdown restrictions, inflation, energy prices, etc.). Secondly, Amazon is ready to take market share, and Meta is developing its metaverse, and is also ready to attack! And thirdly, consumers are expecting new ways of entertainment for a friendlier price.

If I can remember correctly, in 2020, mobile gaming accounted for 60% of all gaming. However, playing games on the cloud is something consumers are expecting even more, especially as 5G is rolled out. It would be good to see Netflix go above and beyond and offer console and cloud-based gaming on different devices, maybe linked to our Netflix account?

I think what plays at Netflix’s advantage is that it already has themes for its games, like Stranger Things, The Walking Dead (I’d love to see something about Black Mirror). I propose it acquires Electronic Arts and gets hold of The Sims – I’d love to play The Sims on the cloud!!

Netflix has been overshadowed recently due to the rise of other streaming platforms like Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu to name a few and have been struggling to come out with new exciting content, so I agree with Ines, it is a great idea for them to get into gaming and broaden its offering now more than ever. Netflix has predicted a weak subscriber growth for the first quarter of 2022 in late January 2022, it seems late arrivals of exciting content like season 2 of Bridgerton didn’t help.

Building on Ines’ point with Netflix having an advantage over having themes for its games, I would also say it also has the audience as Stranger Things is incredibly popular on Netflix (although I confess I haven’t seen it!)

Netflix’s announcement of the acquisition of Next Games corresponds with Netflix’s statement in January 2022 that it aims to be the “absolute best” gaming service in the industry by expanding into this area further in 2022. I am very much a Netflix fan and I hope it does beat its rivals!

I agree with all the points made above as indeed diversifying their stream of income will definitely help in surviving the ever-slowing subscriber turn out.

However, I am a bit skeptical about their content in terms of gaming. As an avid gamer myself, very few games based on a movie do really well. It is usually the other way round. But again, every little bit helps I guess. Especially as most of their competitors offer other services other than just streaming e.g Prime video or Disney+. Also, the bank was not broken for this and so for €65 million, it may very well turn out to be a golden goose!

That is a very interesting point Jeremiah, why do you think that is? (that very few games based on a movie do really well). I thought it was the other way around by I am not a gamer myself. It’d be great to know!
